When You Can't Decide Whether to Save Your Marriage or Let It Go

Maybe you've found yourself searching questions you never imagined you'd ask.

Should I get divorced?

How do I know if my marriage is over?

Am I giving up too soon?

Can trust ever be rebuilt?

Should we stay together for the children?

What if I leave and regret it?

Or perhaps your spouse has already said the words you've been dreading:

"I think I'm done."

Now you're wondering if there's anything left to save.

These questions rarely appear overnight.

They often emerge after months—or even years—of feeling disconnected, repeating the same painful conversations, walking on eggshells, feeling unseen, or wondering whether the relationship can ever become what you hoped it would be.

Some couples are caught in constant conflict.

Others have stopped fighting altogether because they no longer know what to say.

Some still love each other but no longer know how to reach one another.

Others aren't even sure how they got here.

Wherever you find yourselves, you're standing at one of the most difficult crossroads a relationship can face.

You don't want to make a life-changing decision based solely on another painful week.

You also don't want to spend years hoping something will change if it never does.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

There is a structured process designed specifically for couples who aren't yet sure whether to repair the relationship or end it.

It's called Discernment Counseling.

Reach out today to see how I can help!

What Is Discernment Counseling?

Discernment Counseling is a brief, structured process designed for couples who are uncertain about the future of their relationship.

Unlike traditional couples counseling, we don't begin with the assumption that the goal is to save the marriage.

We also don't begin with the assumption that divorce is the answer.

Instead, we slow the process down long enough to understand what has brought your relationship to this point and help each partner gain clarity before making one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

Whether you're leaning toward staying, leaning toward leaving, or simply don't know anymore, this process creates space to make an intentional decision rather than one driven by exhaustion, fear, or hopelessness.

How Do You Know When Your Marriage Is Over?

There isn't a checklist that tells you when a marriage is beyond repair.

For some couples, the issue is constant conflict.

For others, it's years of emotional distance.

Sometimes trust has been broken.

Sometimes you've grown in different directions.

Sometimes one partner has already emotionally checked out while the other is desperately trying to reconnect.

The truth is, uncertainty doesn't always mean your marriage is over.

It may simply mean you need a different conversation than the ones you've been having.

Discernment Counseling isn't about deciding whether your marriage should end.

It's about helping you understand whether the relationship still has a foundation both partners are willing to rebuild.

What If One Spouse Wants a Divorce and the Other Doesn't?

This is one of the most common reasons couples seek Discernment Counseling.

Perhaps you've been asking your spouse to work on the relationship for years, and now they're talking about leaving.

Or maybe you're the one considering divorce but don't want to make a decision you'll later regret.

When one partner is "leaning out" and the other is "leaning in," traditional couples counseling often isn't the best place to begin.

One person is trying to repair the relationship.

The other isn't sure they even want to.

Discernment Counseling acknowledges this reality without taking sides.

Each partner has the opportunity to reflect honestly on their own experience, their contribution to the relationship, and what they truly want moving forward.

Can a Marriage Be Saved After Years of Disconnection?

Sometimes.

Sometimes not.

The more important question is whether both people are willing to honestly explore that possibility.

Discernment Counseling doesn't promise to save every marriage.

It also doesn't assume separation is inevitable.

Instead, it helps couples understand what happened, what patterns developed over time, and whether meaningful change still feels possible.

Whatever decision you ultimately make, my hope is that it comes from clarity rather than fear or pressure.

How Is Discernment Counseling Different From Couples Counseling?

Traditional couples counseling generally assumes both partners have already decided they want to improve the relationship.

Discernment Counseling begins one step earlier.

The question isn't:

"How do we fix this?"

The question is:

"Do we genuinely want to try?"

That difference matters.

Trying to repair a relationship before both partners have answered that question often leaves couples feeling frustrated, stuck, and discouraged.

Discernment Counseling provides a structured process to help you determine your direction before beginning the work of rebuilding—or choosing a different path.

My Approach

Deciding whether to stay in a marriage or end it is one of the most significant decisions a person can make.

My role isn't to persuade you to stay.

My role isn't to encourage divorce.

My role is to create a thoughtful, respectful space where each partner can better understand what has brought the relationship to this point.

Together, we'll explore the relationship patterns, emotional injuries, protective strategies, unmet needs, and recurring cycles that have shaped your marriage—not to determine who is right or wrong, but to better understand how you arrived here.

As clarity begins to emerge, many couples find themselves making decisions from a place of greater confidence rather than confusion or emotional exhaustion.

What to Expect

Discernment Counseling is a short-term process that typically takes place over three to five 90-minute sessions. Each 90-minute session is $350. DC isnot billed through insurance but superbills can be provided depending on the insurance so you may get some or most of it back from your insurance.

Each session includes time together as a couple as well as individual conversations with each partner.

This allows each person to speak openly while also creating opportunities to come back together with greater understanding.

By the end of the process, couples typically choose one of three paths:

  • Continue the relationship as it is.
  • Commit fully to a course of couples therapy focused on rebuilding the marriage.
  • Move toward separation or divorce with greater clarity and intention.

There is no pressure to choose a particular outcome.

The goal is clarity—not persuasion.

You Don't Have to Have the Answer Today

If you've been carrying the weight of this decision by yourself, you don't have to continue navigating it alone.

Discernment Counseling offers a structured, compassionate space to understand where your relationship stands, what has brought you here, and what direction feels most aligned with your values and your future.

Whether you ultimately choose to rebuild your relationship or move toward separation, my hope is that you leave with greater clarity, deeper understanding, and confidence in the path you choose.

If you're ready to begin that conversation, I'd be honored to walk alongside you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Discernment Counseling?

Discernment Counseling is a short-term process for couples who are unsure whether to work on their relationship or separate. The goal isn't to save the marriage or encourage divorce—it's to help both partners gain clarity before making a major decision.

How is Discernment Counseling different from couples counseling?

Couples counseling assumes both partners want to work on the relationship. Discernment Counseling is for couples who haven't reached that decision yet, especially when one partner is leaning out and the other wants to stay.

How do I know if Discernment Counseling is right for us?

It may be a good fit if you're stuck, considering divorce, or feeling uncertain about your future together. It's especially helpful when one partner wants to leave and the other hopes to repair the relationship.

Can Discernment Counseling save a marriage?

Sometimes. But the goal isn't to save the marriage—it's to help you make a thoughtful decision about what comes next. Some couples recommit, while others separate with greater clarity.

What if only one of us wants counseling?

That's one of the most common reasons couples seek Discernment Counseling. The process was designed specifically for relationships where one partner is leaning toward leaving and the other is hoping to stay.

Will you tell us whether we should stay together?

No. My role is not to tell you what decision to make, but to help you understand your relationship more clearly so you can make the decision that's right for you.

How many sessions does it take?

Most couples complete Discernment Counseling in three to five 90-minute sessions.

What happens after Discernment Counseling?

By the end of the process, couples typically choose to continue the relationship as it is, commit to couples therapy, or move toward separation with greater clarity.

Can we meet online?

Yes. I provide secure online Discernment Counseling for couples throughout Connecticut.

Is Discernment Counseling covered by insurance?

Discernment Counseling is a specialized consultation service and is not billed through insurance. I'll discuss fees and answer any questions before we begin.
